Tips and checklist: Going to the beach with a child!
Beach days are the highlight of many children's summers – and swimming trips together create memories that last well into adulthood. In this guide, you'll find everything you need for a successful beach day with your child: what to pack, how to prepare, what games to play to keep your kids entertained and, most importantly, how to stay safe. Also included are tips from parents that will help you have a relaxed and stress-free day.

Black security on the beach!
Be responsible for your child!
In Finland, parents are responsible: a child must be within arm's reach of an adult in the water. Be aware of your own swimming skills and how many children you are going to the beach with.
Protect yourself and your children from the sun
The sun's rays can surprise even on a cloudy day, and children's skin is particularly sensitive to the effects of UV radiation. Even short-term exposure can cause burns, and repeated excessive UV radiation increases the risk of skin damage and skin cancer later in life.
- The sun's UV radiation is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. – exactly when many people spend time at the beach.
- High-protection factor sunscreen (min. SPF 30)
- UV-protected swimsuits for children
- Small towels for face and hands
- Drink bottles for each family member
- Small first aid kit (bandages, disinfectant)

Support your child's swimming skills through play!
Allow enough time. Make sure your child's basic needs (sleep, food) are met, then he will be comfortable in the water.
- Swim vests support a child's water control, but do not replace supervision - use them with caution and in conjunction with guidance.
- It is a good idea to start swimming lessons on the child's terms through play, and to continuously reinforce swimming skills with, for example, flippers and training vests using the correct technique.
- Make water a playful and safe environment for your child – no requirement for performance, just learning through play.
- Let the child proceed in peace : the child gains courage when he knows he is protected.

As for beach bags, remember these too!
- Large beach blanket or rug
- Beach umbrella or tent (especially important for small children!)
- Change of clothes for children
- Wet bags for wet swimwear
- Light lunch and snacks
Entertainment and toys:
- Bucket and spade (a classic that never disappoints!)
- Swimming floats and toys
- Ball for beach games
- Water guns – kids love them! 💦
